What is the success rate of IVF?

It depends on the patient characteristics, treatment approaches and a number of other factors. In addition, it should be noted that pregnancy rates differ from live birth rates.

According to women ages, the approximate live birth rate for each IVF cycle in USA is:

·         30 to 35% for ages up to 35
·         25% for ages 35 to 37
·         15 to 20% for ages 38 to 40
·         6 to 10% for ages over 40

In order to compare success rates of different clinics, it should be clear what type of pregnancies are being compared, i.e. chemical or clinical pregnancies. Chemical pregnancies are the ones confirmed by blood or urine tests, where clinical pregnancies are the ones verified through ultrasound. A miscarriage may occur in both cases, however, in a clinical pregnancy it is less likely.

A 2009 report shows a pregnancy success rate in an average of 29.4% of all cycles (higher or lower depending on the woman’s age)
The average success rate of live births was 22.4% (higher or lower depending on the woman’s age).

The major factor affecting the success rate of IVF is the woman’s age. Women under 35 have a 39.6% chance of having a baby, while women over 40 have an 11.5% chance. The CDC recently found that, as the IVF techniques become more advanced and doctors more experienced, the success rate has increased in all age groups.
